Who Owns and Runs ILT20? Is It an Official ICC Tournament?

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) sanctions ILT20. The ICC has granted the competition multi-year approval, as recorded on the league’s official About page. That makes ILT20 an authorised franchise competition—not an ICC-owned event such as a T20 World Cup, and not a series of international matches between national teams. An ILT20 match is played between franchise squads rather than UAE, India, Pakistan or Afghanistan national XIs.

The franchises are privately owned, often by investment groups with cricket interests elsewhere: Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Desert Vipers, Dubai Capitals, Gulf Giants, MI Emirates and Sharjah Warriorz. The tournament takes place in the UAE even when a franchise shares ownership or branding with an Indian Premier League organisation. An IPL contract does not automatically make a player eligible for a related ILT20 team.

The distinction matters when someone asks whether ILT20 is “Indian” or “Emirati”: it is a UAE-sanctioned league with international investment and international players. Official ILT20 league background.

What is the difference between T20, T20I and ILT20?

• T20 describes a cricket format: each side normally has up to 20 overs in an innings.
• T20I describes an international T20 match between eligible national teams.
• ILT20 is a specific franchise competition using the T20 format. Its players can represent different countries, but the teams are clubs/franchises.

How Does the ILT20 League Format Work?

The six franchises play a double round-robin: each faces each of the other five twice. That produces 10 league games per team. Six teams × 10 games ÷ two participating sides = 30 league matches. Four playoff games—Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the final—bring a completed full-format edition to 34 matches.

What do points and net run rate mean?

A win normally earns two table points; a no-result ordinarily awards one per side, subject to the published competition conditions. When teams finish level on points, tie-break procedures may consider results and net run rate (NRR), calculated from runs scored per over minus runs conceded per over over the relevant matches.

A simple one-match example: if a side scores 180 runs in 20 overs (9.00 per over) and allows 160 in 20 overs (8.00 per over), its NRR for that match is +1.00. Season-long NRR uses cumulative runs and overs rather than the simple average of rounded match NRR figures; all-out innings and revised/shortened matches have special calculation rules.

Why Finishing in the Top Two Matters More Than It Looks

The top four advance, but third and fourth place are not equivalent to first and second. Teams finishing first and second meet in Qualifier 1. Its winner goes directly to the final; its loser gets another chance in Qualifier 2. Third plays fourth in the Eliminator, and the loser goes home.

Suppose every playoff is an independent 50–50 contest. Under that deliberately simplified model, a team in the top two reaches the final by winning Qualifier 1 (50%), or by losing it and then winning Qualifier 2 (25%). That totals 75%. A team finishing third or fourth must win the Eliminator and Qualifier 2: 50% × 50% = 25%.

Model limitation: these figures illustrate the bracket design, not actual Season 5 qualification probabilities. Real teams are not equally strong; the model assumes 50–50 outcomes, independent matches, and no abandonment or other special result.

ILT20 Season 5 Squad Rules: The 18-Player Minimum Explained

The 2026 recruitment framework requires an 18–23-player squad. Its categories are more specific than the phrase “international players” suggests. Each squad must contain at least 11 players from ICC Full Member countries, including at least four from Afghanistan and one from Ireland; at least four UAE players; and specified representation from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and another Associate cricket country.

The league also sets spending and replacement conditions. Teams’ ordinary squad salaries fall within a published US$1.5 million–US$2 million range; wildcard arrangements may sit outside that framework. For specific eligibility or roster changes, consult the official Season 5 auction rules rather than applying past-season rules.

Can Any 11 Players from the Squad Play? A Worked XI Example

No. Meeting the 18–23-player registration rules is not enough. The separate Season 5 playing-XI minimum requires two UAE players, two Afghanistan players and one additional eligible Associate player. The additional Associate position may be fulfilled by a third UAE player or by an eligible player from another Associate nation, including Kuwait or Saudi Arabia.

These examples test the nationality floors only. They do not independently certify compliance with every playing condition, replacement restriction or other match-day rule.

Does an Irish player have to be in the XI?

The published Season 5 squad rules require at least one Irish player in the squad. They do not impose a matching requirement to select an Irish player in every match. That is the crucial difference between a squad-composition mandate and a playing-XI mandate.

Original Calculation: What the 2026 Rules Guarantee on Paper

The tournament is scheduled for 30 league games plus four playoffs. If all 34 matches take place with two compliant starting XIs, each fixture uses four UAE starting positions, four Afghanistan starting positions and two additional Associate-eligible starting positions across both teams.

These floors also explain why a locally eligible batter, wicketkeeper or bowler can be a strategic signing rather than a ceremonial member of the roster. But selection still does not reveal the player’s actual contribution: a player can be named in the XI without batting, bowling or occupying a major tactical role.

What changed for Afghanistan and Ireland?

The Afghanistan Cricket Board reported 25 Afghan players contracted across six teams after the 2026 auction, one more than the aggregate squad minimum of 24 (six teams × four). It also confirmed a minimum of two Afghan players per playing XI. Separately, Cricket Ireland referred to Irish participation in ILT20 through a five-year arrangement involving the ECB. These are documented board-level participation mechanisms; they should not be confused with a guarantee of equal game time or the absence of future availability changes.

Why Does ILT20 Allow So Many Overseas Players?

ILT20 is unusual because it historically permitted up to nine non-local players in a playing XI—far more than the IPL’s four-overseas-player limit. Reporting by BBC Sport in April 2026 described the ICC’s later four-overseas-player framework for newly sanctioned leagues and explained that ILT20 had already obtained its approvals. The league’s chief executive, David White, said it had no plan to reduce the existing overseas allowance.

There are legitimate arguments on both sides. Supporters of the model point to the level of competition, professional opportunities and stronger commercial appeal. Critics argue that a large overseas contingent can reduce meaningful opportunities for home-country players. Simply counting how many UAE players are registered will not resolve that debate; the more informative measures are how often they play, their batting positions, overs bowled, performance over time and progression into higher-level cricket.

What Do the First Four ILT20 Finals Actually Tell Us?

The first four completed editions produced four different champions. That looks like a wide-open championship race, but the finalists show a more concentrated pattern: Desert Vipers reached three of the four finals before winning in January 2026.

• Four champions in four seasons: Gulf Giants, MI Emirates, Dubai Capitals and Desert Vipers each won once. No team has yet defended the trophy.
• Eight finalist places: Desert Vipers took three (37.5%); MI Emirates and Dubai Capitals took two each (25% apiece); Gulf Giants took one (12.5%).
• Two franchises have never reached a final: Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Sharjah Warriorz.
• Two finals won batting first, two chasing: the champion defended totals in 2024 and January 2026, while the champion chased in 2023 and 2025. This small sample does not establish a general toss or innings advantage.

The Vipers’ most recent title illustrates why a final should not be reduced to the winner’s name. On 4 January 2026, Sam Curran made 74 not out in their 182/4, and MI Emirates were dismissed for 136. The 46-run victory followed two previous final defeats. This context makes their repeat meeting in the Season 5 opener meaningful, but it is not grounds to predict another win.

Does ILT20 Help UAE Cricketers? What the Evidence Does—and Does Not—Show

ILT20’s development claim deserves more than a promotional slogan. There are genuine examples of UAE cricketers performing at this level, but it is important to separate measured performances, franchise spending and long-term career development. They are different things.

Evidence 1: Muhammad Waseem has performed against international opposition

In an October 2026 league feature, the official ILT20 record credited Muhammad Waseem with 1,241 runs from 46 ILT20 matches and 68 sixes over the first four editions. The report ranked him third among the competition’s career run-scorers at that point. That is concrete evidence of sustained on-field output by a UAE player—not just a quota place.

Evidence 2: UAE player prices show demand, not proof of development

The same official feature names nine significant UAE-player auction purchases for Season 5. Their published prices total US$765,000 when added together. Muhammad Waseem (US$210,000) and Alishan Sharafu (US$110,000) account for US$320,000 of that subtotal, or approximately 41.8%.

These figures establish that franchises committed meaningful reported sums to particular UAE cricketers. They cannot, by themselves, show that the average UAE player improved or that the league caused an improvement.

Evidence 3: The Development Tournament is a separate route

The 2026 Development Tournament was played at ICC Academy before the senior auction. In its final, Gulf Giants Development beat Desert Vipers Development by four wickets. The official final report records Sagar Kalyan as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 280 runs in seven innings (strike rate 189), and Wali Muhammad Afridi as the leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets in seven innings. These performances are measurable talent signals; a senior contract or international career does not automatically follow.

What would establish a stronger development impact?

• Track how many distinct UAE players actually feature in senior ILT20 matches each season—not just how many appear in squad lists.
• Measure batting positions, balls faced and bowling overs to distinguish meaningful roles from nominal selection.
• Compare individual performance and national-team progression over several years, controlling where possible for prior form and age.
• Separate players who featured in the Development Tournament from those who subsequently secured senior contracts or playing-XI spots.

Until a comparable multi-season player-level dataset is assembled, the responsible conclusion is narrower: ILT20 has created documented participation, professional contract and performance opportunities; the size of its long-term development effect remains a research question.

What Is Different About ILT20 Season 5 in 2026?

Season 5 is scheduled for 21 November–20 December 2026. The opening fixture is Desert Vipers against MI Emirates in Dubai, with 34 matches spread across Dubai International Stadium (15), Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi (11) and Sharjah Cricket Stadium (eight). The 2026 season follows the January 2026 conclusion of Season 4, which explains why two different editions appear in 2026 searches.

The biggest structural change is not a new team or competition format. It is more prescriptive squad recruitment and playing-XI representation, including the Afghanistan and Irish arrangements described above. What Are the Green, White, Red and Blue Belts?

ILT20 awards standout players with distinctive belts rather than relying only on conventional season trophies. The league’s Season 4 prize information identifies four categories:

• Green Belt: leading batter / most runs.
• White Belt: leading wicket-taker.
• Red Belt: most valuable player.
• Blue Belt: best UAE player.

The official Season 4 final preview stated US$15,000 for each belt winner in that edition. Prize conditions can change by season, so that is a historical figure, not a promise about the upcoming Season 5 awards.
